 CALL-IS Developers Showcase

Friday March 17, 2000 4:30-6:30 PM
TESOL 2000 Electronic Village
Moderator: Phil Hubbard, Stanford University phubbard@stanford.edu

1) The Advantage of Creating Interrelated Levels of Lessons Under the Same Topic

Rachel Dorofeeva, Safed Regional College, Israel
raisa@netvision.net.il

We use “Illuminatus” software to produce stand-alone interactive multimedia presentations for educational purposes. Each lesson is complete with self-correcting tasks, feedback, and materials for listening, as judged appropriate to each level. There is also computerized feedback at the end of each lesson, which students submit electronically. Our lessons are designed mainly for use by academic students in an “English Language Laboratory” environment to improve students’ proficiency, as well as their cognitive abilities and skill levels.

Dr. Rachel Dorofeeva taught academic English in the former USSR for 25 years before moving to Israel in 1996. Today she works in the “English Language Lab” at Safed Regional College (a branch of Bar Ilan University) producing CALL lessons for academic students of all levels.

2) The Extensible Markup Language (XML) and ESL on the Web

Douglas Mills, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
dmills@uiuc.edu

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is increasingly important in business web development and holds great potential for CALL as well. XML is much more powerful and versatile than the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) in that it enables the creation of customized markup languages to address specific needs and completely separates the content of a web page from its appearance. These points will be demonstrated with one or two prototype applications of XML to ESL instruction.

Douglas Mills is the CALL Coordinator and Webmaster for the Division of English as an International Language and the Intensive English Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He enjoys exploring the pedagogical potential of cutting-edge technologies and spending time with his wife and children.

3) Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Learning

Jeffrey Mah and Dasha Semenova, Eduverse.com, Vancouver, Canada
jeff@eduverse.com; dsemenova@eduverse.com

This demonstration presents ENGLISH PRO Web Edition, a pronunciation shareware program. ENGLISH PRO, which is based on an original phonological approach, focuses on individual sounds. The lessons provide instructions and guided practice, including a variety of instructional aids, such as visuals, listening and recording tools, a built-in multimedia dictionary, and a unique on-screen keyboard which allows learners to see how the English sound system works. This application is equally suited for independent or classroom study.

Jeffrey Mah, Chief Technology Officer of eduverse.com, has more than 15 years experience in the design and development of leading edge software solutions.

Dasha Semenova, a graduate student at UBC, has taught English and Russian for several years and is currently a curriculum developer for eduverse.com.

4) TeachingExchange.org

Sandra Sklarew, George Mason University, and Ralph Sklarew, TeachingExchange.org, USA
ssklarew@osf1.gmu.edu; Ralph@Sklarew.com

TeachingExchange.org is a Web site that provides a way for teachers to share materials they have already created to supplement and enhance their own courses. These materials may include worksheets, tests, homework assignments, readings, games and skill-based exercises. They are uploaded to the site by their author and downloaded and adapted by other teachers. TeachingExchange.org is a free, timesaving service for the benefit and use of teachers for all levels at schools worldwide.

Sandra Sklarew, who has a MA in linguistics, has taught multi-skill classes at the English Language Institute, George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, for the past twelve years. Ralph Sklarew, who has a PhD in physics, is an inventor and entrepreneur focused on the human-computer interface, software and the Web.

5) ESL Literacy Software

John Allan, Niagara College, Ontario, Canada
JALLAN@niagarac.on.ca

ESL Literacy is a project involving ESL teachers and their CALL facilitator to create a custom program to introduce computers and language to ESL literacy classes. The program is useful for at least ten one hour sessions and is extremely practical for continuous intake ESL literacy classes. It does not have elaborate functions or menus, since a simple interface is what the ESL instructors and their students desired.

John Allan is an ESL CALL facilitator for the CLTA and a multimedia professor at Niagara College in Ontario. He has eight years of experience in CALL labs along with an M.Sc. in CALL.

6) EditIt

Ruth Vilmi, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland
rvilmi@cc.hut.fi

EditIt is a tool for correcting and commenting on students’ writing. Corrected texts can be returned as plain text, hyperlinked and printable versions. EditIt is suitable for virtual classrooms and global corporations, for teaching purposes and for language checking of company documents. EditIt uses an on line database for storing errors and documents, so teachers can work with the same data and collect various statistics on documents written by both local and on-line students.

Ruth Vilmi is an English lecturer at Helsinki University of Technology. She has been interested in the use of computers in education since 1986. In 1993 she started the International Writing Exchange (IWE) and since then has developed and tested software with her students for supporting on line writing courses.
