PRESENTER

SUMMARY

BIOGRAPHY

Bacheller, Frank

In “Avon Cemetery”, learners explore a cemetery presented in QuickTime VR. Responding to oral and written instructions, students note in general what they see and hear. Then they visit specific tombstones and complete a spreadsheet. They fill in dates of birth and death and calculate age at death. Spreadsheet functions are used to analyze the data. Finally, students write a report based on the data they have collected.

Frank Bacheller is director the intensive English program at Utah State University. He has a Ph.D. in instructional technology and is the author of several ESL texts.

Chaffin, Edward

and

Gonzales, Randy

“Institutional Administration and Resource Management through Technology”. This presentation will demonstrate a technology driven system of institutional administration and resource management which operates through a browser interface. By combining database and Internet technologies, routine tasks such as attendance, assessment and teacher/student schedules can be administered from a central institutional portal more efficiently and more reliably than traditional methods allow. Likewise, the creation of an Institutional Student Center which recognizes individual users serves to greater organize and selectively display teaching materials.

Edward Chaffin has taught ESOL in Korea, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. His interests include technology in the ESOL classroom and autonomous learning.

Randy Gonzales has taught ESL/EFL in the United States, Japan and Korea, and is currently working in the United Arab Emirates. He is interested in CALL and Instructional Technology.

Graham, Leah

and

Luke, Chris

ESOL Essayist” is designed to help ESOL students learn the process of essay writing by supplementing existing materials. The project uses anchored instruction with elements of problem-based and project-based learning to situate the content. There are nine modules for students to complete with the guidance of an instructor who makes explicit the ties between the Essayist, classroom/curricular learning goals, and other writing styles.

Leah Graham is a doctoral student at the University of Texas-Austin. Her field of study is concerned with finding pedagogically sound and motivating applications of CALL.

Chris Luke is a doctoral student at the University of Texas-Austin. His research interests include technology-based inquiry learning and sociocultural approaches to foreign language education.

Kelly, Charles

Kelly’s Flash Quiz Machine for the World Wide Web” is a set of three quiz programs written in Flash for the Web. The full version is at http://www.manythings.org/fq/. A cut-down version is at http://a4esl.org/q/f/ where other teachers may submit quizzes to be put online. There is also a further cut-down version at http://www.manythings.org/voa that only has multiple-choice questions.

Charles Kelly works at Aichi Institute of Technology in Toyota, Japan.

McBride, Kara

The author designed a program to be part of the University of Talca’s (Chile) new 24-hour computer lab/”autodidactic” center. The WebCT course supplemented a conversational English class for graduate students. The program uses the same grammar and vocabulary as the class textbook, New Interchange, but has all original material; including dialogues whose continuing story line humorously narrates the story of the class and the program. Thus, it created a familiar context which the students enjoyed manipulating.

Kara McBride has a BS in Philosophy from the University of Oregon, an MA in Spanish from Purdue University and another MA in Applied Linguistics from Indiana University. She just completed three years teaching EFL at the Universidad de Talca in Chile.

Moudraia,

Olga V.

This software presentation will introduce the CAI for reading, “Other Worlds, Other Times” produced in Walailak University, Thailand. It is an interactive web-based program designed for EFL learners of high-beginner to pre-intermediate levels that aim at reinforcing reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. The presenter will begin with an overview of the software, and then she will demonstrate the tasks in one of the fourteen units in detail.

Olga V. Moudraia is currently Assistant Professor at

Walailak University, Thailand where she has taught EFL for the last six years. She is a Russian national. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics and MPhil (Hons.) in Teaching English and Literature. Her research interests include Corpus Linguistics, ESP and CALL.

Rossetti, Mercedes

Reading in the English Class” is a CD-Rom course designed to meet the training needs of teachers of public schools in large classes in Argentina. It was designed in agreement with the Ministry of Education of the Province of Buenos Aires, which has awarded official credits for teachers and focuses on the teaching of reading comprehension skills. The Macromedia Director environment provides a discussion list and access to Internet bibliography from the CD.

Mercedes Rossetti is a free-lance consultant and teacher trainer. She is past co-editor of ESP News from TESOL and Past Chair of ESP IS Argentina TESOL. She is president of Inglés On Line (www.gegoo.com) an Internet teacher training institution using virtual classrooms and producing courses in CD-Rom format.

Sheldrake, Charlotte

The presenter gives an overview of the development process of a series of online ES/FL writing courses, including the creation of a university consortium to provide a comprehensive portfolio of online English language courses. A brief demonstration of one course currently in development includes discussion of the issues and considerations that have formed its design.

Charlotte Sheldrake taught ESL for over 10 years in the public school and university systems. She is a Senior Program Coordinator at the English Language Center, Division of Continuing Studies, University of Victoria, where she is project manager of multi-media English language course development, including online courses and CD-ROMs.
